AI belongs to everyone. This October, Hacktoberfest enters a bold new chapter. The days of chasing arbitrary pull-request counts are in the past; this year, we’re coming together for a high-impact, in-person Hack Day focused on hands-on building, experimenting, and shipping with open-source AI and open-weight models.
Organized by Hackerspace Mumbai in collaboration with our Ecosystem Partner, Paytm, this one-day fest gathers Mumbai’s developers, students, researchers, and builders to explore the frontier of open AI tooling.
What We’re Hacking On
Instead of small PR tweaks, this Hack Day is all about practical, builder-first collaboration:
Open-Source AI Agents: Orchestrating multi-agent systems, autonomous workflows, and agent evaluation.
Open-Weight & Local Models: Running, benchmarking, and fine-tuning models locally using Ollama, vLLM, and Hugging Face.
Modern Developer Protocols: Implementing tool-use, skills.md, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, and secure agent identities.
Full-Stack AI Apps: Building practical RAG pipelines and integrating open AI models into everyday web, mobile, and backend apps.
Who Should Attend?
Whether you run models on dedicated local GPUs or call APIs from lightweight notebooks, there is a table for you:
Solo Hackers & Project Leads: Bring an open-source repo, prototype an agentic idea, or build out an open-weight tool.
Collaborators & First-Time AI Builders: Team up with other builders on sprint challenges, scaffold tools, and learn modern open-source AI workflows hands-on.
Mentors & Maintainers: Facilitate project tables, guide peers through model runtimes, and review architectures.
Locations have different requirements for who can attend. This location is open to the following:
Mumbai's largest OSS community [5k] organizing its longest running tech meetup [over 14 years]
